Dear Family and Friends,
In honor of our son Stephen who passed away of Melanoma skin cancer, we founded Miggy’s Gift, a non-profit organization 501(c)3 committed to creating awareness of Melanoma Skin Cancer and educating our community of the dangers of unprotected UV radiation exposure and the importance of early detection of this most preventable form of cancer.
To date we have donated several sunscreen dispensers, long sleeve shirts with UPF protection, sun glasses, brim hats, and back to school gift certificates to very deserving children. We have continued our hospital visits to oncology pediatric units, provided Miami Dade College with our 2nd Annual Stephen “Miggy” Chavez scholarship grant, and have spoken and distributed reading materials about Melanoma to several civic groups throughout the community. Our biggest accomplishment so far has been speaking in front of the Miami Dade County School Board and obtaining unanimous vote from the board to introduce a sun safety educational program to all children K-12 starting with the 2019 school year. We strongly feel educating our youth about the importance of sun safety and self-checks is imperative for the prevention of future Melanoma Skin Cancer diagnosis.
In order to have the funds to continue with our mission, we need your help! Joining forces with One Change Bracelets, who also advocates for Melanoma Skin Cancer, we are hosting our 2nd Annual Melanoma Awareness Walk for Sunday November 17, 2019 at Coral Reef Park in Palmetto Bay. This year we have named our event “S.O.S. – Save Our Skin Melanoma Awareness Walk”. You can help by becoming one of our walkers and helping us raise funds. For your convenience, we have created an online registration and donation platform that will be available through November 17, 2019. Similar to 2018, we have the option to walk in the event, make a donation, and new in 2019 is the virtual walk. The virtual walk is available to those who may have a prior engagement on November 17th or do not live in South Florida. The virtual walker will receive the event shirt and all the goodies that come along with those who are walking on November 17th. So there are no excuses in 2019 to miss the event, whether in South Florida or elsewhere.
